In this project we were developing our skills in costume interpretation/making. We completed, a workbook including research (with reference list and bibliography), measurement sheets, technical designs and illustrations, fabric samples, budget breakdown, step by step photographs and instructions on the making process, dye room samples, and fitting and dress parade notes. Our tutor Sarah Magill had created several costume designs based on the 1940's era and the novel Jambusters. We were then allocated a design and a fellow student who we had to make the costumes for, so each of us was both modelling and making. We took our models measurements and drafted pattern pieces from basic blocks. We then went to London to purchase fabric (approved by the designer in a meeting) and started making, after basic construction of the costumes we had a costume fitting with our models so we could alter the costume to fit perfectly. We then continued making and added decorative details approved by the designer in a costume parade meeting, where accessories and shoes were also discussed. We then finished making and did eachothers hair and make up in the 1940's style. We all learned a flash mob dance to Ben Goodman's 'Sing Sing Sing' and performed it in our costumes at our 1940's Jambusters event on the last day of term in front of family friends and the author of Jambusters; Julie Summers. I find interpretation more difficult so was quite pleased with my finished costume and how it looked on my model and in the performance. Our Jambusters day was a lovely way to end the year and celebrate all our hard work.
